Government Announces Schools Closing Date

The Ministry of Education has released the third term school calendar ahead of the 2023 National Examinations.

In a statement published on Friday, September 15,  Basic Education Principal Secretary, Dr Bellio Kipsang, revealed schools will commence on October 30.

The Principal Secretary advised parents to prepare accordingly and work closely with teachers to ensure smooth examination period for students.

"All schools opened for the Third Term of the 2023 academic calendar on August 28th, 2023, which is scheduled to run until October 27th, 2023 to pave the way for the national examinations season.

"In the meantime, field officials and institutional administrators are reminded that all school activities involving parents and other stakeholders are not allowed during the Third Term to allow for adequate preparations ahead of the National Examinations that are set to start on 30th October, 2023," the statement read in parts.

Kipsang noted that the government had also put measures in place to ensure that learning is not interrupted during third term.

He also revealed that the government will release all necessary capitation finances to schools in order to ensure that the calendar runs smoothly.

"To ensure normal running of all school activities, the Ministry of Education has received Ksh16,249,982,722.28 Billion as capitation funds from The National Treasury for disbursement to learners in public Primary, Junior and Secondary schools." the statement read in parts.

PS Kipsang stated that Junior Secondary Schools will receive Ksh1.75 billion as capitation funds while Free Primary Education will get Ksh1.56 billion.

At the same time, Free Day Secondary Education will receive Ksh12.9 billion in capitation.

"The Ministry wishes to assure all schools that the funds will be wired to respective school accounts by September 20th, 2023 to facilitate the smooth delivery of targeted learning activities.

"A detailed breakdown on the funds and guidelines on their prudent utilisation have been dispatched to schools in line with Government regulations," the statement read in parts.

In the 2022/2023 Financial Year, the Ministry of Education fully disbursed a total of Ksh89.4 billion as capitation for Primary, Junior and Secondary School learning.
