Manchester United owners the Glazers 'to announce £7.3bn sale'

Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalma has suggested that a Manchester United takeover is nearing completion.

United supporters have been waiting for months for any substantial updates, following the Glazers' announcement that the club would be seeking strategic alternatives last November. A possible takeover or new investment were mentioned as two of the possibilities as a result of the review, but Avram Glazer refused to answer questions about a potential sale during pre-season.

United are preparing to start their Premier League season against Wolves at Old Trafford on Monday night, where there will be a protest against the Glazers’ ownership ahead of kick-off. A group of fans will be meeting at the Holy Trinity statue at 6.30pm, while a sit-in protest has been planned for the following home game with Nottingham Forest.

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have emerged as two men that are battling it out to succeed the Glazers. While there has been no indication that a sale is close, Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman has suggested otherwise.

"Manchester United are going to announce their sale at £7.2bn-7.3bn, which is roughly 10 times their revenue,” Dalman told BBC Sport.

“Two or three years ago, we might have been talking about selling Cardiff for about £20m or £30m, but now you're going to have to look at £90m or £100m. Valuations [of Championship clubs] have all stretched.”

It is unknown whether Dalman shared this information as a direct result of the speculation surrounding a takeover at United or whether he has any inside information. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether the Glazers will secure fresh investment or opt to sell the club.

Summarising their plans in a statement, back in November 2022, Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer said: "As we seek to continue building on the Club’s history of success, the Board has authorised a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives. We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximises the significant growth opportunities available to the Club today and in the future.

“Throughout this process we will remain fully focused on serving the best interests of our fans, shareholders, and various stakeholders.”
