Mathare United, Mara Sugar stumble in promotion race, Kisumu All Stars and Nairobi United secure crucial win

Mathare United's hopes of instant return to the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) got a huge upset on Sunday afternoon following their 1-0 loss to SS Assad at Ukunda Showgrounds.

The slum boys needed a win to keep pace with leaders Naivas FC who on Saturday trounced Migori Youth 4-0 to open a three point gap at the summit.

Mara Sugar dropped out of promotion brackets after going down to a well rested Dimba Patriots at The Wolves Den in Kajiado.

It was the first time in three weeks the Wolves were taking to the field after FKF had suspended their matches indefinitely.

The millers now move to fourth on 40 points, two behind the green zone.

Meanwhile, at Mumias Sports Complex, promotion chasing Nairobi United took huge strides towards elevation to the top flight league at their first time of asking following a hard fought 1-0 victory over Mulembe United.

Nairobi are now third on the standings with 42 points, four off the summit and two behind second placed Mathare.
